BADS has helped shape a new consensus statement designed to support best practice in day surgery services across the UK. Back
A new consensus statement on day surgery has been published following a collaboration between the Association of Anaesthetists, BADS and the Association of Paediatric Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland.
Peri-operative Management of Patients Having Day Surgery brings together recommendations from a multidisciplinary group of experts to support the safe and effective delivery of day surgery services across the UK.
With an increasing number of procedures being carried out as day cases, day surgery plays an important role in improving patient experience, making the best use of healthcare resources and helping to reduce waiting times. This new guidance provides practical advice across the patient pathway, covering areas including patient selection, pre-assessment, optimisation, anaesthetic techniques and discharge planning.
BADS contributors to the statement included David Bunting, BADS Immediate Past President, Lindsay Hudman, BADS Publications Officer and Rachel Tibble, BADS President-Elect. Rachel also presented a session on the statement at the Association of Anaesthetists Annual Congress 2026.
We encourage BADS members and colleagues involved in day surgery services to explore the document and consider how its recommendations can support local practice.
