New Directory of Procedures metric 'operational bed day opportunity' shows savings if day cases maximised using current NHS bed capacity.

The BADS Directory of Procedures and National Dataset metrics have been updated to expand information about the impact of maximising day surgery performance on potential national bed and cost savings using Excess Bed Days, which is now complemented by the addition of Operational Bed Day Opportunity Back

Excess bed days savings assume all listed BADS procedures are treated within the BADS targets, whereas operational opportunity shows savings based on existing bed NHS bed capacity. Combined with the expanding directory content, that now lists recommended day case rates for over 300 surgical procedures, this provides a comprehensive overview of efficiencies that can identified for re-investment into frontline patient care.

The procedures are listed by specialty and defined using OPCS coding. The day-case rates are aspirational, being based on a combination of reported practice from leaders in their field, actual rates from Hospital Episode Statistics figures and expert opinion. The National Dataset is produced in collaboration with CHKS using their hospital benchmarking solution iCompare. It shows the day surgery performance of the top achieving 5% of hospitals and 50% of English hospitals for all the operations listed in the BADS Directory of Procedures, with potential release of inpatient beds and cost savings achieved by maximising day case rates.
