Intracranial Hydatid Cyst: A Rare Case Report and Review of Literature

Akinde Daniel

This case report discusses the rare presentation of intracranial hydatid cysts, a brain condition caused by Echinococcus granulosus. The case involves a 6-yearold male from a low socioeconomic background who presented with focal seizures. The patient's neurological examination was unremarkable, but he underwent occipital craniectomy with cyst removal. The patient was placed on albendazole postoperatively, and a follow-up CT scan confirmed total cyst removal with no neurological deficits. The case highlights the importance of early diagnosis using imaging and serology, combined with precise surgical intervention, to ensure optimal outcomes. The case underscores the importance of early recognition and management of intracranial hydatid cysts, with timely imaging and surgical intervention, along with antiparasitic therapy, ensuring optimal outcomes. Increased awareness among clinicians and public health initiatives are key to reducing the burden of hydatid disease. Key recommendations include considering hydatid cysts in differential diagnoses of pediatric cystic brain lesions, using imaging and serology for prompt diagnosis, ensuring careful surgical removal to prevent complications, and implementing community education and preventive measures in endemic regions.
