Trainee Opportunities: A Unique Surgical Training Collaboration

Steven Gopaul

Introduction
A novel collaboration between an NHS Trust and a local GP practice has created a distinctive model for surgical training in day-case hernia surgery. This initiative offers trainees direct supervision by two highly experienced consultant general surgeons, enabling intensive learning outside the traditional hospital setting. This abstract explores trainee perspectives on the educational value of this model.

Methods
Qualitative data were collected through reflective trainee logs and informal feedback following participation in the scheme. Thematic framework analysis was employed to identify key themes relating to educational benefit, supervision, and integration of feedback. Particular attention was paid to positive trainee experiences and perceived impact on confidence and competence.

Results
Three major themes emerged including (1) High-quality supervision: Trainees valued regular, direct feedback from consultants, which enabled them to rapidly incorporate learning into clinical practice. (2) Continuity and holistic learning: Active involvement across the full patient pathway enhanced understanding of surgical care. (3) Supportive learning environment: The community-based setting offered a low-pressure, high-support context that fostered skill development and professional growth.
Trainees consistently described the experience as highly beneficial, highlighting increased confidence, improved technical ability, and a stronger sense of surgical identity.

Conclusion
This NHS-GP collaboration provides a replicable and sustainable model for enhancing day surgery training. Its strengths lie in expert supervision, real-time feedback, and immersive learning. Widening access to similar initiatives could help address current challenges in surgical education and expand high-quality training capacity across the UK.
